Junior Estimator Job Summary


The junior estimator role is to assist the estimator with the following:

» Prepare accurate product cost estimates for new products for all manufacturing departments in a timely manner.


» Review and update cost estimates for existing manufactured products utilizing sales order travelers and data input from department managers. 


» Analyze inputs to determine how much time, money, and labor a project requires. These estimates take many factors into account, including allowances for wasted material, shipping delays, and other factors that can increase costs and lower profitability.


The goal of the estimator is to provide detailed cost estimates so the company can make timely and accurate quotations to current and prospective customers that will enhance its profitability and growth.



Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Receive requests for cost estimates from senior estimator and the sales team.

  • Assists senior estimator by gathering drawings, specifications, and related documents.

  • Work with sales teams to prepare estimates and bids for customers.

  • Identify and quantify cost factors, such as production time, materials, and labor expenses.

  • Communicate directly with suppliers and team members on estimates.

  • Compute costs by analyzing labor, material, and time requirements.

  • Check raw material costs in MS Dynamics GP for “current cost” accuracy.

  • Prepare cost estimate utilizing department cost MS Excel templates. 

  • Maintain cost data base by entering and backing up data.

  • Recommend ways to make a product more cost effective or profitable, i.e. economic volumes, manufacturing process changes.

  • Present prepared estimates by assembling and displaying numerical and descriptive information.

  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

  • Ensure timely completion of estimates (goal is for 24-hour turnaround and quote to customer).

  • Assists senior estimator to meet the requirement above when needed.

  • Understand scope of work to bid.

  • Prepare cost analysis.

  • Understand the product or project/program and its requirements.

  • Determine key variables for cost and other estimates

  • Gather first-hand information from sites, warehouses or other venues.

  • Conduct research to obtain data on labor costs, materials, production times etc.

  • Obtain and review offers and quotes by subcontractors or vendors.

  • Perform risk analysis.

  • Build relationships with key vendors (subcontractors, suppliers, engineers etc.)

Job Requirements

  • Willingness to be a part of a family owned and operated company that works hard and has fun!

  • Minimum high school diploma or AA degree

  • Minimum one years’ experience estimating in manufacturing.

  • Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel experience (pivot table experience a plus).

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Highly self-motivated and able to work both independently and with a team.

  • Possess excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Possess a high degree of professionalism.
